When designing a web site, the most important feature is simplicity. It is easy for creative people to assume that everyone is comfortable with their creativity. While a number of sites provide complicated customization features - such as for business cards, birth announcements and the like - what most of us want is for a professional to do it for us. We don't want to learn a new software application to order a set of blinds.
Offering too many options is a very bad thing. If a customer is unsure about a choice they can freeze up, and you can kiss your sale goodbye. Web sites need to be drop dead obvious - if you need to explain it, you've failed.
