DNR Renewal Scam
“Domain Registry of America” – which is based in Canada – is in the habit of sending urgent renewal notices to people who are NOT their customers. The language is intended to make you think that you MUST send them money immediately or risk losing all rights to your domain forever.
Most domains are “locked” against transfer out, and require active participation from the domain owner or administrator in order to complete the transfer and actually extend the registration for a year. So, quite often, the customer would be confused by queries from the actual Registrar of their domains. In 2003 a class action lawsuit against the “Domain Registry of America” forbade them from deducting a service fee when the transfers did not go through.
If you receive something from this company, it is best thrown in the trash. If you have questions about the status of your domain name registration, call your registrar or your administrator.
